Community Network Forum: Shaping the Future of Leisure and Wellness in Whittlesea

26 Mar 2025
Media Release

Connecting with local stakeholders is essential to understanding the diverse needs of the communities we serve. To foster this connection, we host biannual Community Network Forums, creating a space for collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and meaningful conversations that shape the programs and services we deliver.

Since our first forum in October 2021, these gatherings have played a crucial role in identifying local challenges, strengthening partnerships, and driving community-led solutions.

The Community Network Forum, held on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, at the Kirrip Community Centre, marked the beginning of Understanding Your Community, providing a platform and bringing together diverse voices to explore barriers, foster collaboration, and lay the foundation for co-designed initiatives that align with the aspirations of local residents.

The insights gathered will help shape our community engagement plan, ensuring programs are sustainable, inclusive, and responsive to local needs. This is not just a conversation but the first step toward lasting impact, innovation, and shared success in the City of Whittlesea.

Addressing Community Needs

Hosted by Mill Park Leisure and Thomastown Recreation & Aquatic Centre (TRAC) on behalf of the City of Whittlesea, the forum provided an opportunity to showcase current programs and initiatives while revisiting key insights gained from past gatherings. A central focus was identifying gaps in current programming and exploring solutions to bridge them. The discussions emphasised the importance of co-designing programs to meet community needs, ensuring long-term sustainability, and trialling new initiatives that could provide lasting benefits.

Current Initiative

Mernda Place-Based Classes

Our place-based approach is already making an impact in Mernda. What began as a Zumba class has evolved into the Active Adults program shaped by valuable community feedback and collaboration with Mernda Neighbourhood House. Building on this success, we are exploring opportunities to expand Place-Based classes in Donnybrook and Wollert, ensuring more residents have access to tailored fitness programs. Additionally, we are engaging with 30 Aqua Aerobics participants at Whittlesea Swim Centre to explore new opportunities for staying active through the winter months.

Looking Ahead

The Community Network Forum was a vital step in strengthening connections, addressing community needs, and co-designing programs that enhance health, wellness, and inclusion. As we move forward, we remain committed to fostering collaboration, adapting to community feedback, and ensuring that leisure and wellness opportunities remain accessible and impactful for all residents across the City of Whittlesea.
